The concept of Personal Safety Education & Sexuality goes hand in hand. It works to allow every child to know their rights, understand their bodies, emotions, identify trusted adults and sexuality. It is designed to empower them with knowledge and skills that will keep them safe from all forms of abuse, especially sexual abuse.
Sexuality is about knowing who you are, being comfortable with your body, your identity, roles, rights, values/ beliefs, skills, relationships and so on. Today, a child is exposed to sexuality in different forms all the time. Right from soap operas, to item numbers, to serials, to ads, they are exposed to images and information via newspaper, TV, magazines; all which carry strong messages on the topic. A child unknowingly absorbs, builds and seals ideas about themselves and their bodies, in general, from those words and concepts.
The concept of gender sensitivity is developed as a way to reduce barriers to personal development created by sexism. To prevent any form of abuse among-st sexes, it is pivotal to talk about gender roles and societal raised gender biases. Today, it is not only the boys, but girls have lost the sensitivity to the other gender. Gender sensitivity helps to generate respect for the individual irrespective of sex.
Gender sensitization is not girls VS boys. It is intended to help them determine assumptions & believes in matter of gender that are valid, true and which are stereotyped generalizations. The programme aims to instill open–mindedness and dissolve ‘gender–gaps’.
