Mindfulness has a lot in common with, and in many ways complements, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), since both aim to teach individuals how to build self-awareness, effectively handle their emotions, and em-pathetically manage relationships.
Mindfulness is an inside – out approach aimed to help students, parents and teachers to bring their attention to the ‘Now’, invite openness rather than chastising oneself to let go of intense feelings and breathe fully into the attitude of self – compassion and acceptance.
Social Emotional Learning uses the outside – in approach, focusing more on a set of skills like how to mediate a conflict, how to verbally express feelings, how to make decisions and solve problems.
We use both inside – out and outside – in approach to integrate deep self – knowledge and life skills. Mindfulness is used as a tool ( More as an ‘I’)to gently invite individuals to look within with kindness and social emotional skills ( As ‘you & We’) to build on healthy compassionate relationships.
School heads today are faced with novel challenges, limited resources and increased demands for their expertise and time. The constant pressure to perform can deplete mental resilience and interfere with the ability to focus, to see clearly, to cultivate spaces for creativity and embody compassion.
How do I manage the ‘busyness’ of the day? How do I work with others without being threatened? How do I manage negative feelings? How do I manage stress? How do I listen compassionately? How do I communicate authentically? How do I give meaningful – constructive feedbacks? How do I receive feedbacks? Am I in control?
A 2 day workshop will educate school heads on how to cultivate the ability to focus, see past our own filters, be more innovative and embody compassion. The workshop aims to work as a team, be mindful about responses, accept people and give feedbacks in a way that truly matters and is goal - driven.
Why do teachers need to be Mindful?
Most teacher training focus primarily on content and pedagogy, overlooking the very real social, emotional and cognitive demands of teaching itself. How does a teacher take care of her own emotional need? How does a teacher stay focused in a chaotic class? How does she stay calm and composed throughout the busy day? How does she make a smooth transition from one session to another? How does a teacher manage her work and personal life?
On the other hand, how does a teacher manage a disruptive class? How does she create a disciplined and an organized classroom environment? How does she teach empathy in the gentlest way?
How does she address attention and behavioral issues in classrooms?
It‘s essential for adults working with young children to be well—physically and emotionally. Better health enables better relationships with children, and research has long demonstrated that good relationships are crucial for children‘s learning and social-emotional development. Mindfulness helps teachers be more effective at reducing conflict and develop more positive ways of relating in the classroom, which can help them feel more contented at work.
